Skate Park Grand Opening Comments by Reedsport Mayor Keith Tymchuk

I regret that I am not in attendance today. I do however, wish to make a few comments. First, to Twinkie Goorhuis, Matt Smart and all of the Reedsport Activities Park volunteers, you are to be congratulated on a job very well done. By all accounts the new skate park is a facility that exceeds all others in the region. It may, in fact, be one of the best in the state! It will be well used for years by Reedsport skaters and will bring new people into the community and new dollars into local businesses. Persistence and lots of hard work has made your dream a reality. Your efforts are to be applauded. The second part of my comments relate not only to my role as Mayor but also to my profession as an educator. They are directed to the young people in attendance. The park you now stand beside and have the opportunity to enjoy is the result of the dedication of a small group of people and their willingness to get involved in a system. As a teacher I am continually telling my students the importance of being involved in the political process. This park is a great example of that. Were it not for the efforts, within the system, of the fine RAP folks this project would not have been achieved. Not only did they raise the money but they also raised the awareness of the community. They became involved and achieved great things. Each young person in attendance today should remember this lesson. If you wish to achieve things politically you must get involved. Great achievements, like this new park, (do) not get done by magic. Dedicated people, working overtime, and working within the system get them done. As you age into your voting years remember this lesson. Be active, be involved, and volunteer your time. In that way you, like the people who accomplished this new park, can achieve great things. And as you enjoy the park remember the efforts of those who made it possible and take care of it also. This is a great facility and we all can be justly proud.

The full-pipe is a good place to escape the rain.

Pepsi brought drinks for the crowd - delivered in their Sierra Mist Hummer.

Too wet to skate? This guy doesn't let that stop him from enjoying the park.

It was documented by Thrasher magazine and was also video taped for inclusion in a skateboarding video.
